What's in a Name?

The Goulburn Regional Conservatorium crept into life some 34 years ago as the Goulburn School of Music. It was very much a local operation and there was no large Association of Regional Conservatoriums to speak of. Across the state other Regional Conservatoriums were emerging but it was all very much early days. Over time we have grown and become established as have the other Regional Cons that now make up the Association of NSW Regional Conservatoriums. Each Regional Con has its own distinct service region. Our is quite interesting and diverse. We begin at Mittagong and run through the Southern Highlands, including Robertson, then across to Braidwood and Queanbeyan, down through Murrumbateman and Yass then up through Gunning, Crookwell, Laggan and Taralga. This region also includes all of the "Shire of Villages" such as Tirannaville, Wingello, Tallong, Penrose, Bundanoon, Exeter, Windellama and so on. It is a substantial and beautiful region of the state.

For most of our 34 year history we have placed most of our service focus on Goulburn and surrounds, but today we have grown far beyond that. We are now delivering regular music education and performance experiences and programs right across our region and we are proud to do so. We have worked hard to ensure the quality and consistency of our programs and we have a wonderful cohort of staff to deliver them. As such, it is time to make a fundamental change to our regional identity - a change of name! We are excited to announce that from today, we are to be known as:

HUME CONSERVATORIUM

By making this change we join the majority of our Regional Conservatorium colleagues in taking a regional name (Riverina Con, Murray Con, New England Con to name a few). We are also proud to associate ourselves with one of our foundation Australian explorers - Hamilton Hume - whose grave is in Yass. The concept of brave exploration also aligns well with musical exploration. It speaks to the concepts of adventure, challenge, perseverance and determination - all valuable qualities to possess when exploring music.

Over time all of the aspects that need to be changed will happen - new logo, new emails, new graphics and so on, but do not worry - it will all link back to us!

Finally, and most importantly, we will always be based in Goulburn as Goulburn is the beating heart of our region. However, we hope that our new identity (HumeCon)

Time for change

will be seen to embrace our entire region and bring everyone together in the pursuit of, and enjoyment of music!
