Hume Conservatorium has come such a long way over the past decade. Although it is not good to live in the past, our history does provide context and can aid our appreciation of where we are and how we got here. HumeCon (previously Goulburn Regional Con) is now 35 years old. It has only been formally supported and partially funded by the NSW Department of Education for around 17 years but that fundamental change in the financial foundation of all Regional Cons has completely transformed the scope and impact of the Association of Regional Cons across NSW. Today, there are 17 Regional Cons and we have a collective enrollment of around 30000 people, young and not so young! We employ over 3000 music teachers, administrators and additional professional musicians and our regional reach is steadily increasing. Regional Cons do amazing work and are recognised in the Arts and Education industries as being arts and music powerhouses, energising and engaging with a myriad of regional communities. Hume Conservatorium certainly plays its part with 1300 enrolments and an annual events calendar demonstrating our capacity to sustain 130 events and concerts on average per annum. We have recently undergone an evolutionary staff change as happens in all Regional Cons from time to time. This has given us a wonderful opportunity to renew and refresh our staff cohort. We have a new raft of Head of Faculty positions which add rigor and diversity to our teaching. We are developing a "whole of institution" curriculum structure and we are reaching out to our regional community in new and meaningful ways. After the horrendous summer we have all endured, it is tempting and somewhat necessary to focus on what has been lost and how we might better survive into the future. HumeCon has its part to play in raising spirits, connecting communities and breaking down social isolation through music activity. We want to make it easy for you to keep music in your lives and use music as a power to heal and recover. Our theme for 2020 is "Changing Lives Through Music" and could not be more relevant. We have seen the power of music and the arts to support communities and achieve amazing outcomes through fundraising. HumeCon will be actively seeking ways to help, support and change lives for the better throughout 2020 and beyond. If you would like to explore ideas, please make contact. Let's see what we can achieve together!
